Kellermeister Legacy Continues

An exciting change of ownership has been announced at boutique Barossa wine producer, Kellermeister. The winery was purchased by the Pearce family in November last year, upon the retirement of Ralph and Melval (Val) Jones, who founded the company in 1976.

Together with his close-knit, vibrant, young team, Mark Pearce’s vision is to continue to build on Kellermeister’s legacy, which Ralph and Val Jones began more than 35 years ago.

“Our founders put their heart and soul into Kellermeister for over 35 years, and it is our privilege and intention to preserve and celebrate that extraordinary legacy, and to continue their work by building on the wonderful business they created together. Ralph and Val retired happy in the knowledge that their heritage would continue, and that they can now quietly enjoy the fruits of their labour in their later years,” said owner-winemaker Mark Pearce.

After several years at the historic and much loved Wirra Wirra in McLaren Vale, Mark Pearce joined Kellermeister in late 2009. Mark accepted an invitation to move to the Barossa Valley to lead the winery, which was at the time experiencing significant internal and external business challenges.

Mentored by some of the best international winemakers in Australia, and ably assisted in a winemaking capacity by Andrew Cockram, Mark’s winemaking philosophy is acutely focused on continuing to make Kellermeister’s best traditional wines true to their long-established style. Mark will also be introducing his own new wines made with the goal of expressing the purity and provenance of the Barossa. Mark is passionately committed to continuing Kellermeister’s long-standing relationships with its small group of family grape growers.

“My winemaking philosophy is distinctly artisan, more about art than science. I’m passionate about expressing the whole context of where, how and why our wines are crafted,” said Mark.

“I’m blessed to be working with our multi-generational Barossa growers. Most of these guys have been growing grapes in the same patches of Barossa dirt for generations, so they know their vineyards intimately, and we share a passion for seeing their land clearly reflected in the wines. I look forward to working closely with them all, and continuing to learn from them in the coming years,” said Mark.

Mark’s latest collection of wines, ‘The Storyboard’, was recently released to wide acclaim. Every wine in the collection has been awarded medals, with the 2011 The Funk Wagon GSM blend taking the highest honour so far, winning the trophy for Best Barossa SGM at the International Wine Competition in London. This win follows on from last year’s success at the same competition, in which the icon 2008 Wild Witch Shiraz was crowned Best Shiraz in the World, among other trophies.

Mark and his wife Susanna and their three young children live on their own vineyard property, Threefold Farm, near Angaston in the Barossa Valley. A trio of single vineyard wines made with fruit from the property is soon to be released.

“With an energetic and vibrant team and a clear vision to continue to build on Kellermeister’s legacy, the winery has a very exciting future,” said Mark.
